Co-founder of the cultural non-profit association “Experimenta”, created in Lisbon in 1998, of which is Chair since 2000. Since 1999 she dedicates herself to directing and programming the biennale ExperimentaDesign being co-author and Director. She is also curatorially responsible or co-responsible for each project the association promotes since its creation, as well as for the management of the association’s institutional and international relations, for its communication and strategic development. She is Chair of ExperimentaDesign Amsterdam Foundation, created in Amsterdam in January 2008 to develop the Dutch edition of the biennale ExperimentaDesign. She is also currently in charge of co-curating a cultural programme for La Gaité Lirique, a new cultural venue in Paris opened last March, and is a communication consultant for the Music Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and she is currently hosting a tv talk show entitled “ Cidades Visíveis (Visible Cities), focusing on culture and creative practices in contemporary urban contexts. In 2009, she was in charge of the coordination and strategic design of Allgarve Contemporary Art programme
She makes part of the International Advisory Committee of the “Torino 2008 World Design Capital”, travelling to this city regularly to give her contribution to the first world capital of design. She made part of the International Think Tank for the Scottish event “Six Cities Design Festival”, whose first edition takes place in Scotland in 2007, and of the Editorial Committee of the “Utrecht Manifest Design 2007”, in Holland.
She is the Curatorial Director of the Massimo Dutti Design Award, whose first edition takes place in 2007, for the promotion and recognition of the Portuguese equipment design. She is one of the ten international curators featured in the latest Phaidon Press book about contemporary industrial design, “& Fork”, published in April, 2007.
She was advisor to the CEO of the Fundação Casa da Música in the area of Communication, Marketing, Design and Development from September 2006 to January 2007, working two days a week at Porto.
She taught at the Escola Superior de Arte e Design das Caldas da Rainha in 2006 and was responsible for one of the units of the subject Cultural Management.
She was named Administrator of the Fundação Centro Cultural de Belém by the Portuguese government in November 2004, occupying that post until October 30, 2005. Between 2002 and 2005, she made part of the Management Board of the Francisco Capelo Industrial Design and Fashion Collection, whose estate constitutes today the Museu do Design. She was a member of the Advisory Board to the Commemoration of the 30 years of 25 de Abril (the Portuguese revolution), created in 2004, and is one of the promoters of Compromisso Portugal.
She made part of the television show Encontro Marcado, from September 2004 to September 2005, being responsible for interviewing guests on themes that belonged exclusively to the area of Portuguese contemporary culture. She was co-author of the television show EXDMagazine about design and contemporary culture (2001), and co-author of the rehabilitation project for the 72nd Lisbon Book Fair (Lisbon, 2002).
She began her career in equipment design in 1992, being co-founder, with Rui Morgado, of the atelier Elementos Combinados. Since then, she has projected, published and commercialized a number of furniture series, creating since 1997 different projects about the interdisciplinarity of design and its relation to other creative areas, namely music and writing, with participations in exhibitions, individually or collectively.
Actively engaged in the international design community as a curator, creative director, strategist and critical thinker since the early 90’s, GMG has integrated several high-profile committees and juris, she runs and curates exhibition projects in the area of design, working also as consultant and speaker at debates and conferences in the area of design and strategic development, both in Portugal and abroad. She writes about design, culture and communication for Portuguese and international magazines.
From 1990 until 1993, she was Marketing and Communication Director of the nightclub Sociedade Anónima, with a capacity of 3000-people, for which she conceived and ran an ongoing cultural programming. She finished the 4th year in Piano at the Conservatory, entered the 1st year in Biology at Universidade dos Açores, completed a Cobol 74 programming course and graduated in Hotel Management at Universidade Internacional de Lisboa, in 1987. Afterwards, she took the 1st year in Design Architecture at Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, interrupting her studies in the second year to found the Experimenta association in 1988.
She received in 2004 the Medal of Cultural Merit, awarded by the Torres Vedras City Hall, and in March 2005 she was distinguished by the French Government with the “Ordre de Chevalier des Arts e des Lettres” for her work in the design field around the world.
